Nitrification rates in the baltic sea: comparison of three isotope techniques.

چکیده

Simultaneous measurements of nitrification in the Baltic Sea were made at 10- to 30-m intervals in the months of June and November by three isotope techniques: [N]nitrate dilution, N-serve sensitive [C]bicarbonate incorporation, and [N]ammonium oxidation to nitrite and nitrate. Nitrification rates of 1 to 280 nmol liter day were recorded, and each method showed that the highest rates of nitrification occurred below the halocline. Even in the presence of ammonium, dark incubations of mixed layer (above ca. 50 m) waters never yielded nitrification rates exceeding 45 nmol liter day. The rates measured by the ammonium oxidation method were two- to sevenfold greater than those obtained by C incorporation or N dilution. The merits of each technique are discussed, and it is suggested that the [N]ammonium oxidation method should be used in conjunction with the [C]bicarbonate incorporation method.

Seasonal variation in nitrification and nitrate- reduction pathways in coastal sediments in the Gulf of Finland, Baltic Sea

The Baltic Sea is one of the most eutrophic marine areas in the world. The role of nitrogen as a eutrophicating nutrient in the Baltic Sea has remained controversial owing to a lack of understanding of nitrogen cycling in the area. We investigated the seasonal variation in sediment nitrification, denitrification, anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox), and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to amm...

Ammonia oxidation rates and nitrification in the Arabian Sea

[1] Nitrification rates, as well as the relationships between rates and ammonia oxidizer abundance (both archaeal and bacterial), were investigated in the Arabian Sea. Ammonia oxidation rates were measured directly using N-NH4 + stable isotope additions in gas-impermeable, trace metal clean trilaminate bags (500 mL) at in situ temperature. Tracer incubations were performed at three stations at ...

Nitrification and growth of autotrophic nitrifying bacteria and Thaumarchaeota in the coastal North Sea

Nitrification and the associated growth of autotrophic nitrifiers, as well as the contributions of bacteria and Thaumarchaeota to total autotrophic C-fixation by nitrifiers were investigated in the Dutch coastal North Sea from October 2007 to March 2008. Rates of nitrification were determined by incubation of water samples with 15N-ammonium and growth of autotrophic nitrifiers was measured by i...

Stable Isotope Tracing of Anaerobic Methane Oxidation in the Gassy Sediments of Eckernförde Bay, German Baltic Sea

Methane concentrations in the pore waters of Eckernförde Bay in the German Baltic Sea generally reach gas bubble saturation values within the upper meter of the sediment column. The depth at which saturation occurs is controlled by a balance between rates of methane production, consumption (oxidation), and transport. The relative importance of anaerobic methane oxidation (AMO) in controlling di...
